Biden Ramps Up Pressure on Hamas for Ceasefire and Hostage Release in Gaza
The Hostage Negotiations and Cairo Talks
As the hostage negotiations remain deadlocked, the United States is pulling out all the stops to broker a breakthrough.
CIA Director Bill Burns will lead the U.S. delegation to the Cairo talks, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Biden has written letters to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, urging them to “secure commitments from Hamas to agree and abide by a deal.”
The Proposed Deal and Sticking Points
Under the latest proposal on the table, Israel and Hamas would agree to a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of sick, elderly, and wounded hostages held by Hamas.
However, progress has stalled for weeks, with Hamas refusing to budge.
A senior Biden administration official bluntly stated, “There would be a ceasefire in Gaza today had Hamas simply agreed to release this vulnerable category of hostages.”
Dire Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The United States and its allies view a ceasefire as crucial to allowing more humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, where fears of famine among Palestinians are mounting.
The official stressed, ”The onus is on Hamas to release the hostages and bring relief to the people of Gaza through a prolonged ceasefire.”
Biden’s Diplomatic Outreach and Warnings
Besides his outreach to Egypt and Qatar, Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, discussing the hostage negotiations and the upcoming Cairo talks.
Biden instructed Netanyahu to empower his negotiators in Cairo to facilitate a deal.
The President also warned Netanyahu that Israel must take steps to address civilian harm and humanitarian suffering, or the U.S. will take unspecified actions in response.
Next Steps and Increased Pressure
As the diplomatic efforts intensify, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will meet with the families of the hostages at the White House on Monday.
Israel has also announced measures to increase the flow of aid into Gaza, including opening the Ashdod port and Erez crossing.
However, when asked if he had threatened to withhold military support for Israel, Biden responded enigmatically, “I asked them to do what they’re doing.”
With the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepening and the stakes rising, all eyes are on the Cairo talks this weekend.
The world awaits to see if Biden’s diplomatic push can break the impasse and secure a ceasefire and hostage release from the intransigent Hamas militants.
