In a recent meeting with senior editors of international news agencies, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stark warning about the potential deployment of conventional missiles within striking distance of the United States and its European allies.
This warning comes in response to the possibility of Ukraine being allowed to strike deeper into Russia with long-range Western weapons.
Putin emphasized that the West should not assume Russia would never use nuclear weapons and that the Kremlin’s nuclear doctrine should be taken seriously.

Putin Warns of Potential Missile Deployment as Ukraine Conflict Escalates
He went on further to differentiate between the different types of missiles but cautioned that allowing Kyiv to strike Russia with increasingly powerful weapons would be a significant escalation, drawing the West closer to a war with Russia.
Russia’s response, according to Putin, would be to shoot down Western missiles, specifically mentioning U.S. ATACMS, as well as British and French missile systems.
Additionally, he stated that Moscow is considering deploying similar high-technology, long-range missiles close enough to strike the states that permitted Ukraine to target Russian territory with such missiles.
While President Joe Biden has authorized Kyiv to launch some U.S.-supplied weapons at military targets inside Russia, Washington still prohibits Ukraine from striking Russia with ATACMS, which have a range of up to 186 miles (300 km), and other long-range U.S.-supplied weapons.
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, during a recent visit to Kyiv, told Reuters that Ukraine had the right to use the weapons provided by Britain to strike targets inside Russia and that it was up to Kyiv to decide whether to do so.
During the extensive three-hour meeting with journalists at the newly built 81-floor Gazprom tower, Putin also touched on various subjects, from the war in Gaza to the upcoming U.S. election.
He expressed his belief that no one in the United States is genuinely interested in Ukraine but rather in the greatness of the United States itself.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, with more than two years of the deadliest land war in Europe since World War Two, Putin increasingly discusses the risk of a global conflict.
When asked about the risk of nuclear war, he stated that Russia’s nuclear doctrine allows for the use of such weapons and that the West should not take this lightly.
The conflict in Ukraine is part of an existential battle with what Putin perceives as a declining and decadent West, which he believes humiliated Russia after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 by encroaching on Moscow’s sphere of influence, including Ukraine.
While Western leaders and Ukraine have downplayed Russia’s warnings about the risk of a broader war, they have repeatedly warned that Putin might attack a member of NATO, the world’s most powerful military alliance.
As tensions continue to escalate, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this complex and dangerous situation.
