Tesla Recalls Nearly 200,000 Vehicles in the US to Fix Rearview Camera Glitch
This massive recall covers 2023 Model S, X, and Y vehicles.
It comes less than two months after Tesla had to recall nearly all vehicles in the US to address problems with its advanced driver assistance system called Autopilot.
According to the NHTSA, the rearview camera glitch is caused by software instability that can lead to decreased visibility for the driver and potentially increase the risk of a collision.
The affected vehicles are equipped with Tesla’s latest internal camera technology for rearview imaging while in reverse.
However, a bug in the software can cause distortion, or complete loss of the camera feed intermittently during backing up.
To fix the issue, Tesla has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will be sent wirelessly to covered vehicles.
As of January 22nd, Tesla identified 81 warranty claims that may be linked to the rearview camera problem, per the regulator.
This is the second major recall for Tesla in recent months, following the one for Autopilot in October 2022.
That previous recall was triggered after NHTSA investigations found problems with the automated driving assistance features failing to properly detect emergency vehicles parked on the road, resulting in multiple crashes.
The rearview camera recall again puts the safety of Tesla’s much-hyped advanced vehicle software into question.
While OTA updates allow for issues to be fixed wirelessly, more oversight may be needed to prevent safety-critical bugs from making it to public release in the first place.
Overall, this latest recall covers many Tesla vehicles on US roads today.
Drivers of Model S, Model X, and Model Y vehicles from 2023 should be looking for the OTA software update from Tesla to resolve the rearview camera distortion problems.
Stay tuned for any further details from Tesla or NHTSA.
